FINALLY! Our big break! We traveled for the first time today after a grand total of seven days of bad weather at Punta Raul (we appropriately re-named it "Cuatro Vientos" - 4 winds - after the high winds coming from every direction). Patagonia finally blessed us with some decent weather! We left the beach around 10 am, paddled for 4 or 5 hours and went roughly 15 nautical miles. Besides a lack of energy due to dehydration, it was an awesome day. We are camped in a small cove with a river flowing beside us. It kind of reminds me of the Rocky Mountains (minus the differences in vegetation). I'm very excited about the next couple of days. We are about 25 miles away from the Patagonian southern ice field. It will be so cool to paddle through icebergs - I'm struggling to even imagine what we are going to see in the next week.
I'm having mixed feelings about sea kayaking. Not the most exhilarating sport (at least not thus far) but it definitely involves a lot of planning and technical details. I think these next 20 days of paddling will teach me about pacing and patience. It's a slow trek but the journey will most definitely be worth it - vale la pena.
It's another 6:45 wake up tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it and praying that this relatively mild weather sticks around. Now for some well-deserved sleep. How will I get lulled to sleep without rain? Just kidding - it just started sprinkling... Patagonia is reading my mind.
